The Susana Gimenez show

 Buenos Aires, Argentina

September 2001

NOTE: This trip began late on the evening of September 10, 2001. The attacks which destroyed the world trade centers, damaged the pentagon, and caused another plane to be lost in Pennsylvania took place while we were still in the air approaching Buenos Aires. As the events of September 11th unfolded, Scott and I were unaware and in a country where neither of us spoke the local languages. By that evening we began to get an idea of what had happened and ultimately managed to at least confirm to our families that we were ok and get some word from home. The shut down of the airlines following the tragedy meant that we had to spend some extra days in Argentina, pondering the state of things back home in the US and anxiously catching bits and pieces from CNN. Ultimately, we decided that the only thing to do was to go on as we normally would - there was nothing we could do otherwise that would have been at all productive or gotten us home any sooner to check on friends and family in NYC and across the rest of the country. Both of us have alot of friends in and ties to NYC and our sympathies go out to everyone who has suffered the loss of loved ones and had to persevere through this crisis.

Shortly after moving to Austin, TX to be with Meghan I was contacted by the Susana Gimenez Show. They had been referred to me by Jim Rose while researching unusual acts to have on the show. Ultimately, they decided that they wanted to have me come to their studios in Buenos Aires and perform the gavage. So, with less than a week in the new apartment in Austin I was on a plane to Chicago where I would meet Scott (flying in from Albany) and we would both make the 12 hour flight to Argentina. Usually, I tend to sleep on flights but since the drinks were free and the in flight movies were decent...

When we landed in Buenos Aires we were met by a car and staffer from the show who took us to our hotel: The Mayflower Suites. Now, I'll never say a place is too good for us but next to the Hotel Rex in San Francisco, this is probably one the nicest places I have stayed for a combination of facilities and service.

 The hotel entrance.

 Honor (?!) Bar...

 The view from our window.

The show taping itself was pretty uneventful. We did it without the studio audience so it was only the crew, Susana, and us there for the taping. The show staff and Susana were wonderful and went out of their way to try and make things go well for us, given the situation back home.

 The Dressing Room.

 Scott enjoys the dressing room.

The silver lining, so to speak, was that we were able to put our extra time to use by seeing Buenos Aires and pursuing our usual less than high brow pursuits...

A liter of beer for a dollar.

The Simpsons are everywhere. (thankfully)

 Do NOT drink this stuff.

We never did get the PPV to work.

Of course, there's no sight like home...

"Chicago welcomes you" - and we appreciate it.

 Though, it might be awhile...

Once back in the US, at Ohare airport, both Scott and were able to get connecting flights without too much delay (all things considered). I actually took a flight back to Dallas and then rented a car to get back to Austin.
