Calgary Tattoo & Arts Festival

 February 19 - 21, 2005

Less than a week after returning from a TV appearance in France I was once again flying out of the states - this time to Canada for my second time there professionally. My Canadian live performance debut had been two years ago at Klondike Days, but growing up in upstate NY I had, of course, been into Canada many times - often to sample their fine beers at an age frowned upon in the states.

Dr. Grift and I flew in on the 17th and were met promptly upon our arrival by the organizer Steve Peace. We might have been a bit more prompt had the doctor remembered to bring his passport, but after a short convesation with immigration they let him enter and all was fine. Steve shuttled us to the hotel we would be staying at and where the convention would be held - The Westin. Westins are damn fine hotels and we were quite happy with this surprise. While we settled into the hotel and took a quick look around the general area Steve continued to run airport shuttles and do the other duties necessary to put on a good show. In fact, Steve regualrly went well above and beyond the call of duty for the show and its attendees. He and his wife Lindsay busted their asses and put on a great show. They deserve all the credit in the world, I was very impressed. That night we hung and had a couple drinks with Steve and Lindsay and met some of the other people working the event but were soon off to bed due to early morning press commitments.

The morning of the 18th we were out of bed and off to a morning tv show, where I may have psychologically scarred one of the hosts but all in the name of good press for the event. After that it was off to another shoot for local news and then a nice brunch. In the evening we were bussed out to a bar for dinner along with the artists and other staff for a welcome dinner and party. It was here that we gave our first performance and it couldn't have gone better. After the show we caught one of the early buses back to the hotel to get some rest before working the booth the next day. This turned out to be a good decision since the buses stopped running early due to some confusion but Steve stepped up and taxied all those left behind personally back to the hotel.

The next three days were spent working the merchandise booth and giving daily performances. Our merchandise sold very well, we ran out of shirts and polaroid film, and the room was packed for every show. We got to meet a lot of cool new people and there wasa strong IAM showing which happens more and more these days. It was everything I could have asked for in an event - plus there were pornographic balloon sculptures!

Tuesday morning we checked out of the Westin, grabbed a cab to the airport, and flew home. Along the way the law of averages caught up with us a couple times though to balance out our fine weekend. There were flight delays, money changing difficulties, and then lost luggage. But, by wednesday it had all been sorted out. Now, we are just looking forward to a possible return in 2006.
