Sideshows by the Seashore

 Hardcore Weekend

July 13-14, 2002

The back story: Somewhere around 96-97, I was living in Albany, NY and attending graduate school in pursuit of doctorate in philosophy. What I actually spent most of my time doing though was contemplating and preparing for anything but a career in academia. My return to university life had simply reminded why I was happy to have gotten out when I got my BA a few years before. As much as I love the intellectual environment and resources, the political structure, bureaucracy, and many other aspects drive me nuts.

So, one day I emailed Fredini (Fred Kahl) at Coney Island and told him about what I did and my plans. Fred was very nice and also put me in contact with Dick Zigun. We talked a bit but nothing came of it at the time. Coincidentally, I shared an apartment at that time with girl who happened to work with Fred's mother in Albany.

Jump ahead to the summer of 2002. It's been about six years and my transformation and show have progressed considerably but something is missing - I've still never played Coney Island. Once again I email Fredini and he helps set up with Dick an event: Hardcore Weekend. For two days I would join the cast of Sideshows by the Seashore and also give a special performance of my one man show on Saturday night.

The overwhelming feeling I am left with after being there, even for so short a time, is one of being at ease. The whole cast and staff welcomed us and I really felt at home. I had what is easily one the best times I have ever had working just being there and hanging out with everyone. I am now envious of everyone who gets to call Coney Island home.
