The
Palace
of
Variety

 Times Square, NYC

January 29th, 2003

The Bindlestiff Family Circus is an impressive group of people and at their heart are two even more exceptional people: Keith & Stephanie.

I first got to meet Keith at The Sideshow Gathering in 2002. It was there that he first mentioned their plans for The Palace of Variety wherby they would bring our unique form of entertainment back to Times Square. It was incredibly ambitious and they pulled it off. So, when they offered me the chance to come in and do my show I had to take it.

After finishing up in Ohio at the Superbowl of Ink, Scott and I drove to Albany and then onto NYC. The space was perfect. They had created a free museum/lobby, a cozy theatre space, and great backstage/dressing area. However, the real draw has to have been the fuzzy bathroom - wallpapered in shag carpet and complete with vintage penis pump advertisement wall poster...

To help draw a crowd I jumped in front window while a gorilla suited cast member handed out flyers and the amazing Tyler Fyre (from Coney Island) talked them off the streets and into their seats.

With this sort of spectacle going on it wasn't hard to stop even the most jaded in their tracks and we soon had a nicely filled house ready for a show.

We took a rather minimal approach to the set, going very much along the lines of spoken word punctuated by the acts. The corwd was into it and played along wonderfully. Thanks to their drummer I did finally get to have the rimshots I so often imagine in my head echo through the house.

In the end, I had a feeling similiar to that which struck me at Coney Island - a feeling of great pride and thankfullness at being lucky enough to have been part of something so special.

And, of course, in attendance as always for my NYC dates was Rob Vermont - thanks for the support Tiny!
