Sideshow Saturday Night

 Nov. 30th 2002

Sometime in September I got a call from [the incomparable] Todd Robbins. I really liked Todd when I first met him a couple years ago doing Sideshow Celebrities for E! and earlier this year I had the chance to work with him in Sioux Falls and at the Sideshow Gathering. So, when he told me he was doing a new show in NYC and that he was inviting people to be his special guests each week - I couldn't say no. It was a bit difficult to get the scheduling down but ultimately we settled on Nov 30th. I would be visiting my family for the holidays in upstate NY and would drive down to the city to do the show that night.

The morning of the 30th, Meghan and I borrowed my mother's car and drove from Ellenburg down to Albany where we picked up Scott and Fred. We had a little extra time, so we stopped by Sadie's for some food, followed by a show supply run to the nearby Price Chopper, and then it was off to Manhattan.

Even with the slightly increased saturday night traffic due to thanksgiving, we made it to the Soho Playhouse (15 Vandam Street) in time to see Todd and Chris McDaniel (the other guest performer for the night) hanging the show banner. We got a parking spot right in front of the theatre and then walked a couple blocks to a small italian place for dinner before the show.

The show went really well. Todd opened and then brought out Chris with his wild west act, afterwhich Todd ran a bladebox for the psuedo-intermission, and then brought me to the stage. I did about twenty five minutes, including some completely new bits which happily were well received. My act list consisted of a straightjacket routine, pierced weightlifting, hand challenges, lizard dartboard, and finally a flaming groin smash. When I was done, Todd came back up and closed the show.

The crowd was enthusiastic and contained some familiar faces. The Coney Island crew made it out and Tiny and Carlos showed up too. Once we cleaned up the stage and packed our gear back into the car, everyone went around the corner to an Irish pub for a couple drinks. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay too long as we had to make the six hour return drive back up to Ellenburg - with a stop off in Albany to bring Scott and Fred home.
